Holy Sisters convent
Askeran Province, Avetaranots village
According to an inscription on the church door, the convent was built in 1616 on the site of an ancient 5th-6th-century monastery, the remains of which can still be seen, situated on a hillock on southwestern edge of Avetaranots village. The convent was an important spiritual and cultural centre here in the past, and is thought to have been inspired by Sts. Gayane and Hripsime. The vestibule of the main church served as a family burial ground for the noble house of Melik-Shahnazaryan.
