Message of His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, on the Occasion of the Independence Day of the Republic of Artsakh
Beloved People,
September 2 marks the Independence Day of Artsakh. Even amidst the occupation and complete ethnic cleansing of Artsakh, we continue to commemorate this historic day, for Artsakh is not merely a chapter of the past but remains a part of our historical homeland. It is the land where the people of Artsakh have lived and thrived for millennia, safeguarding their identity, honoring the legacy of their ancestors, and cherishing their sacred values with blood and toil, all while nurturing their cherished dreams for a brighter future.
We continue to mark Artsakh’s Independence Day as an expression of righteous defiance against the genocide, violence, and hatred perpetrated against our people. Violence cannot erase human memory, nor can it silence the voice of justice. We believe that our historical memories and the heroic deeds of our ancestors will strengthen us, enabling our people to overcome the devastating consequences of war. With patriotic and devoted spirit, we will persist in pursuing our national aspirations and visions with faith and hope.
The commemoration of Artsakh’s Independence Day is also a message to our people and to the international community, which upholds the highest values of humanity, urging them to make concerted efforts toward the triumph of justice and truth. It is a call to protect the violated rights of the people of Artsakh and to preserve Artsakh’s Armenian spiritual and cultural heritage, which spans centuries.
On this sacred day, let us raise heartfelt prayers to God for all the brave souls who gave their lives for the liberation and defense of Artsakh. Let us also seek the Lord’s assistance for the swift release of Artsakh’s political and military leaders and all our compatriots held captive.
May the Heavenly Lord always kindle love and loyalty for the homeland in the hearts of our people. May He spread peace and consolation in our national life and guide our entire nation toward bright and victorious horizons. Amen.
