“I Also Try to Follow in Komitas’ Spiritual Footsteps”

Sub-deacon Davit Pashayan was born in 1991 in Stepanakert. In 1992, a few months after the liberation of Shushi, his family moved to the town. He studied at the Daniel Ghazaryan Specialized Music School in Shushi, graduating from the trumpet and piano departments.

In 2007, he was admitted to the Komitas State Conservatory in Yerevan. After completing his studies in Military Conducting in 2011, he served as a military conductor in the 5th Defense Region of the Artsakh Defense Army.

Speaking of Komitas, Davit notes: “Lately, people have often compared me to Komitas. As much as my strength allows, I try to emulate him spiritually as well.”

During his service, Davit developed a close bond with his childhood friend, Deacon Narek Petrosyan of Shushi, who served as the spiritual pastor of the military unit. Although Davit had long been searching for God, it was Narek’s character that inspired him to pursue a spiritual path. After completing his military contract in 2016, Davit entered the Gevorkian Theological Seminary in Etchmiadzin.

Upon graduation, he was ordained as a Sub-deacon and appointed to serve in the Diocese of Artsakh. Later, by the decision of His Grace Bishop Vrtanes Abrahamyan, he was appointed Chief Secretary of the Diocese, a role he held until the forced displacement. From the very first moments of the 2023 war, he was at the Holy Mother of God Church in Stepanakert, where people had taken refuge in the basement. He assisted in every way he could. Davit left Artsakh on September 28 and currently continues his service at the Yerevan office of the Diocese of Artsakh.
