Catholicos of All Armenians Vazgen the First, made great efforts for the prosperity of the Armenian Church. Large church restoration work was carried out, and inter-church ties were strengthened.

Artsakh was under his special attention. In 1989, the Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church in Artsakh was restored under a separate order of Catholicos Vazgen the First. The opening and reconstruction of a number of churches and monasteries in Artsakh was undertaken.
