Koshik Hermitage

Martakert Province, Kolatak

This monastery is located 10-12 km southwest of the village of Kolatak, Martakert region on a forested hill. The entire complex is made up of three churches, a vestibule, refectory, graveyard and reservoir. Ruins of cells, communal buildings and a bath can also be found on the site. The inscription dating from 1265 on the facade of the altar of the main church indicates that the Koshik Complex was the family mausoleum of Prince Kherkhan, the son of Hasan and grandson of King Baghats. Under his command, the prince renovated several of the monastery's churches, including St. Stephen's. There are also many finely-engraved khachkars in various places in the complex.
